The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Bill worked on the boat today.

Thursday, April 19, 1979 Carmen getting ready to go

A real April day. Sunny, cloudy, snow, wind, rain and hail and sun. All kinds of weather on this one day, generally it was a nice day, on the cool side with those flurries during PM. It cleared off this evening for a nice day tomorrow they say. I went to town in a.m. Susan, Delores and I with the kids. I ironed some things for Carmen. All 3 kids were up here this PM. Carmen made some brownies for her trip tomorrow which she is very excited about. Kim helped to make a pie then we all watched TV General Hospital and One Life to live. Carmen is very pleased about going away, also Kim and Walt are going to tour around Boston tomorrow to see some places of interest which I am very pleased for Kim.

Friday, April 20, 1979 Carmen left at 5 AM this morning for Fox Lane High School in Bedford New York, Kim to Boston town.

Well I got up very early at 4:30 AM to see them off. Walt and Kimmy took Carmen and Zenya to South Station in Boston with other members of the American Field Exchange student to take a train (Amtrak) to Bedford New York to visit the students who came here for 5 days. She was very pleased and excited about the strip. First time she had ever been away all alone. Kim went also and Walt showed her around Boston, the historic and places of interest. She and Walt both were exhausted when they got home about 7:30 PM. The man came back and finished Betty’s floors this evening, got through at about 11 PM. I done a big wash. I washed windows, defrosted refrigerator. Zak up here in PM and to stay all night. I also got the clothes in and ironed. In late PM we got some cloudy skies and wind.
