The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 29 - May 2, 1979

Sunday, April 29, 1979 that awful early time again, one hour early, I hate it.

It is been a cloudy day all day. I got up, got my work done. I worked at the desk all day, got all my reading caught up. Billie didn’t do anything. Billie helped Carmen do her fencing. Betty and Walt raked the lawns.

Monday, April 30, 1979 A VERY NICE SUNNY DAY, COWS OUT

Well at last we had a very nice sunny day on the hot side. It seemed so good. I hope we have many more. I done up my work, got ready, went down to Betty’s. We cleaned Kim’s room and got Carmen’s room started. It was hard on my feet and back. We got that much done anyway. I came home, got supper and did some washing. As it is supposed to be a good day tomorrow. Fern was a very big help to get all the clothes wash. Billie turned the cows out tonight after he got home from work.

Well not too bad a day, not as good as yesterday though. As the weather forecast it would. I went down to Betty’s again. Fern came up again too and done the wash which is a big help. We worked hard and got the rest of Carmen’s room done. Zak’s, the Hall, dark bedroom and all finished up upstairs. It was very late and not easy. The weather wasn’t too good, thundershower (first one of the year) cloudy.

Wednesday, May 2, 1979

A quite nice day except it was on the cold side. Well, down to Betty’s again. We did her room, halls, bathroom and dusted and touched up the den. I didn’t get quite as tired as yesterday.
