The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 15 - 17, 1979 Easter and Earthquakes

Sunday, April 15, 1979 Easter Sunday

Well this is what you would not call Easter weather. We get it most every Easter Sunday. It is too bad we don’t get better weather. We have miserable weather two thirds of the times it seems we do. Well this was Easter Sunday, the Hortons and their Aunt  Fern was here. We had the usual. Ham, spinach, salad, mashed potatoes, salad, hot cross buns, homemade bread, lemon sponge and custard pie and cake. We talked, looked at or Betty did the scrapbooks and some diaries.

Monday, April 16, 1979

Another one of those miserable days. I done up my regular work, washed kitchen floor. I done a little on the scraps. Then I went down to Betty’s. Joy was there, we packed her dishes so as to get ready to move out the furniture so they can sand the floors down. I came home about 2 PM. Watched my programs, done some more on the scraps. Carmen down to Danny Hayes’s, they worked on the project for their New York trip. In late PM it stopped raining and snowing.

Tuesday, April 17, 1979 2 EARTHQUAKES at 9:10 and 9:40 PM

Well it was another cloudy day. I done up the work, the sun came out so I began the wash but before I could get it on the line it began to rain again. Laurie, Richard and Carmen came for breakfast. Zak and Kimmy were here. Zak ate and then went outside, he and Kim played with the skateboards. The 3 enjoyed their breakfast, they later went to the Shrine Circus in Portland. Also Vince, Monica and Chris went with Chris Quinn. Finished the scraps. Tonight at 9:10 and 9:43 we had earthquakes. It did a lot of rumbling. It was felt all over New England.
