The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 21 - 23, 1975 Dorothea Graduates Nursing School

Wednesday, May 21, 1975 Kimmey

It was hot in a.m., but the temperatures dropped, it got cooler. We had some rain and showers. We went to Portland shopping, Betty did a lot. I got a few things. Tonight the Brownies had their fly up. Kimmy became a Girl Scout. Betty and I went, it was a very nice program. She was very proud and so were we to get her pin wings and badge. We saw Dorothea today. She isn’t too happy about their breakup. She is trying to put the best side out.

Thursday, May 22, 1975 DOROTHEA graduates

I done up my regular work. Did some washing. I washed some windows etc. Betty helped. In p.m. we went to Gorham to see Dorothea graduates from nurses school. She got a certificate and a rank of 97.4%. She is smart. I was very pleased and proud to see her. She done very well again I must say. She is very pleased and happy now she can go to work. She is quite upset about David but tries not to let anybody know how she feels. She is a good girl through and through.

Friday, May 23, 1975 DOROTHEA GOT A JOB, THUNDERSHOWERS, HOT

What a real hot day this has been. I went down to Betty’s, we cleaned her house. Bill worked down there painting etc. We got Zak’s play house ready for him to play in this summer. I washed this p.m. And late in p.m. Dorothea came and told her she has a job. I’m so pleased. We got a very bad thundershower and heavy winds. It done some damage around. Dorothea out and got a job in a Jewish nursing home. That is good news. She is so happy and will go to work next Tuesday.
