The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 17 - 20, 1975

Saturday, May 17, 1975 bathroom and breezeway

A very beautiful day. Sunny all day. I cleaned the blue bathroom, breezeway, made rolls, a chocolate cake, baked beans and washed twice. Kids and Carmen called also Betty. Carmen and Zenya rode horseback. Hortons all rode after supper. Walt worked all day testing. Billie went with Lawrence. Bill got a nice pole for Betty’s flagpole. Betty mowed her lawns for first time.

Sunday, May 18, 1975

I done a big wash and a lot of odds and end jobs. Billie went with Lawrence. Bill didn’t do anything today. Worked away I mean. Down to Betty’s for a cookout. It was very good, just the Hortons and Crooks.

Monday, May 19, 1975 NEW CALF, FINISHED HOUSECLEANING, VERY HOT

Today Betty came up in a.m., we did the two bedrooms and in p.m. with Fern’s help we did the living room. I’m so relieved it all look so nice. Bill painted at Betty’s. Mr. Saltman called in evening. Esther here, we got some dandelions. Today Billie traded calves. He traded the big robust Chalolais steer for a rhone red calf. Bill worked on the flag pole. I did another big wash. A very unusual hot day for this time of year.
