The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 28 - May 1, 1975 War Ended


Monday, April 28, 1975 Robert Hospital

Another cloudy day, cold. We worked at Betty’s, cleaned more closets, draws, bookcases etc. Today Robert back in hospital. His asthma attack is bad. We called on Pat tonight, also at Fern and Lloyd’s. Es, Billie and me. School began again today, the LAST TERM. Billie home today with a very lame arm. He didn’t feel too good.



Tuesday, April 29, 1975 WAR ENDED

Clear and sunny when we got up. Billie back to work, arm still quite lame. Betty and I to Portland shopping this p.m. Zak went with us but stayed at Dorothea’s while we shopped. Billie done a lot more raking today and this evening. Finally the war in Vietnam ended today. After years in there fighting.



Wednesday, April 30, 1975 a very nice day

Today it has been a beautiful day all day. We got to cleaning cupboards at Betty’s early. We got all the china closets done, cupboards, and draws. Fern came up and helped. She done a very good job at helping. It boosted us along good. Joy called at Betty’s today. Walt home at noon. He was out on some jobs. Billie finished his raking and cleaning up tonight. It looks very nice.





Thursday, May 1, 1975 NICE DAY

Another beautiful day. Up early, done my work, down to Betty’s. We done her kitchen cupboards, draws etc. Fern, Esther helped. I came home, made a salad for supper, had cold meat. It has been very sunny and warm. Bill painted. Billie raked his lawn and cleaned the driveway tonight. Walt home today and got some jobs caught up.
