The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 21 - 23, 1975

Friday, February 21, 1975 CLEAR AND MILD, KIM HAIR CUT, CARMEN AND WALT

A nice mild day. I done my regular work. Washed windows, dusted, done the cooking. Bill went to town. In middle of forenoon Betty came and brought Zak. He came and is staying up all night. Betty and Kim got haircuts and Kim looks so much much much better. Nothing I’d rather have is to see nice haircuts especially on my own family. Hope someday the shorter hair comes back. Today Carmen and Walt went to Boston to go sightseeing. She saw many interesting sites. It was very nice for her. It was nice of Walt to take her. She was quite thrilled about it. Kimmy went with Billie over to Norway and up after milk. Betty had company, Louise Valley. Billie didn’t have any work at the shop this p.m.

Saturday, February 22, 1975 Washington’s Birthday, TV back

Well, it was clear when we got up but it got quite hazy yet it is considered a nice day. I done regular work, made a cake, made rolls. Washed kitchen floor. Zak watched TV all morning. Betty picked him up about 11. Billie put his car through the car washed and he and I washed windows and he cleaned the inside. Billie got his income checks back $173. Carmen over to Brackets’ for supper and then went to the movies in Portland with Brackets. Buddy, Joy and kids called. Buddy brought the TV back all fixed. They were at Betty and Walt’s for supper. Joy isn’t very well.

Sunday, February 23, 1975

It has been cloudy all day but very mild. Snow settled a lot. I done regular work. Billie up to Chet’s. Keith Bryant called. Linda Berry came, got the TV. Betty and Walt called, also Lloyd. Carmen and Kim made us a call also.
