The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 10 - 13, 1975

Monday, February 10, 1975 15 below

A very nice sunny day after a very cold night and morning. It has been cold all day. I was down to Betty’s. She is having the group at her house tomorrow. Still wet in the tie up. It is warm enough.

Tuesday, February 11, 1975

Not so cold this morning, 18 below. I done up my regular work. Went down town, got Betty’s donuts and came home. Washed dark clothes and which I dry inside, made two dishes of custard. Lloyd called in forenoon.

Wednesday, February 12, 1975 calf born about 3 AM, Kim home sick

Very cold, cloudy, partly some light snow. Kimmy home sick with a bad sore throat and a cold. Bill out to the barn most of the day. The electric heaters helping a lot. He fixed a stall for him. We was up all night with the cow having her calf. She had a hard time.

Betty and Billie helped with the tough delivery

Thursday, February 13, 1975 Carmen made the honor roll at school, Kim made honor roll also
Still very cold. I have been busy. I did some washing. Also did some ironing. Bill down to Betty’s trying to thaw out the waterpipe. Had to have a plumber come. Betty took Marcia to town. Esther over tonight. Carmen pleased us all tonight, she made the honor roll at school. Also Kimberly made a honor grade too.
