The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 24 - 27, 1975


Monday, February 24, 1975 DAYLIGHT TIME, VERY MILD

It began to rain today. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s for a little while. Came home, read rest of the Bridgton news. We began daylight time today. It’s AWFUL. Betty and Dawn went and got a load of shavings. She went down to Dawn’s in PM. Zak was up here.



Tuesday, February 25, 1975

This has been a bad rainy day. In p.m. it cleared and froze on the trees. Betty to her meeting in a.m. I had Zak in p.m. Bill went to the dump.



Wednesday, February 26, 1975

A nice day but on the cold side. I went down to Betty’s. We cleaned up her house. In p.m. I read my papers, watch TV etc.



Thursday, February 27, 1975

Partly cloudy but a good drying day. I did a big wash. I was down to Betty’s a little while. In p.m. Bill took me to town. I did a dite of shopping. Esther and Chris was over this evening. Betty, Walt and Zak came up too. Walt came up to talk to Bill about the letter he got from Robinson, his lawyer, today. Betty down town this a.m. to call on Sandy.
