The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 6 - 8, 1975 Dorothea and David to Divorce

Tuesday, May 6, 1975 Howland Downey

It started out cloudy and windy, the wind very cold. I washed this a.m. In p.m. I went down to Betty’s. We done Zak’s bedroom, the hallway and part of the bathroom. Bill finished painting Betty’s kitchen ceiling. Kim stayed for brownies. Billie trimmed up all around the wall in his pasture. It looks good. Bill did some harrowing. This morning we got a very sad news about Howie, our neighbor and good friend. It was such a shock. We saw him in the hospital last night while we were down to see Robert.

Wednesday, May 7, 1975

Cloudy and showery. It was supposed to be sunny. Down to Betty’s. We cleaned her room, den, both hallways and bathroom. Esther and Cliff over this evening. Tonight Dorothea called Betty. She is very upset. She and David are going to divorce. A six-month waiting period, by then things may cool down and get over. I don’t know how much more Dorothea can take. Jeff makes life confusing and unpleasant at times for her. He is a good honest boy and I love him, she does too. He is going through the teenage difficult time. Things will work out and smoothed away. It is hard for David too.

Thursday, May 8, 1975

A beautiful day. I got my work done and down to Betty’s. Fern came also. We cleaned her living room, dining room and washed all the windows downstairs. Bill finished painting the windows. It helps so much, what Fern done. It has been a wonderful sunny day. This evening we went down to the funeral parlor to see Howie. He looks so nice. Fern, Lloyd went down with Betty and Walt. Es was there, she came home with Betty, Walt, Fern and Lloyd.
