The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 12 - 14, 1975 Kim's 9th Birthday

Saturday, April 12, 1975 Kimberly nine today, had her ears pierced

It was another nice day. I got my regular work done. Betty, Kimmy and I went to Portland. Kimmy had her years pierced for ear rings. A birthday gift. We stopped at Dorothea’s a minute. She or Jeff want at home. David was raking his yard. We got the Italian rolls on the way home for tomorrow. I came home, made a cake. Washed windows, dusted, washed clothes, washed floor. Betty and Walt came up, we made a bargaining deal with the property. He pays us $4000 plus the amount we owe him and when the land is sold we divide up. A big relief for us.

Sunday, April 13, 1975 Kimberly Allie Boutilier Horton birthday celebration, she was nine years yesterday

It was clear and sunny when we got up but it got hazy and some cloudy. It was some windy and on the very cool side. I got up and got my work done up early, got ready and went down and got Fern and Lloyd. We went to Betty’s. Lloyd came up here with Billie and stayed here with Bill and Billie until it was time to eat. Fern, Betty and I made the sandwiches. We had Italian sandwiches. Kimmy opened her gifts  then we had the beautiful birthday cake Dorothea made and ice cream. Fern, Lloyd, Esther, Susan and children, Dorothea, David, Bill, Billie and me and the Horton family. She got a lot of nice gifts, clothes etc.

I still have that suitcase!

Monday, April 14, 1975

It dawned clear and sunny and temperature up to 32°. I got my wash to going early and got it done before I went to Fern’s with Betty to clean at Ferns. We did the cellar, cellar way and back bedroom. Bill deposited a lot of money today.
