The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 20 - 22, 1975 Party for Billie's Birthday

Thursday, March 20, 1975

A very heavy rain all day and until into the evening. Our cellar had a flash flood in it this morning backed up from the ditch. We worked on it all day. Then at night Walt came up, he, Billie and Bill got the rug out of the bedroom onto some props to dry out if possible. What a mess. Betty down to Dawn’s. They went to Portland to see Dawn’s mother in the hospital. I had Zak. I made two chicken pies and a large chocolate layer cake. Betty had a chicken pie and we did. Also I gave her some of the cake. Esther over here for supper and evening.

Friday, March 21, 1975 windy, no school teachers meeting

A very nice sunny day, but awful windy. I done my regular work. Washed windows, made a cake, done the dusting, got ready, went to town with Betty and what a time had with the kids. There wasn’t any school today. In p.m. I worked on my scraps. Carmen came up and stayed all night. Betty made me a tuna fish casserole.

Saturday, March 22, 1975

Well it has been a cloudy day. I was busy all day. Billie went with Lawrence. Bill didn’t do anything, took a long nap and watched TV. Carmen called. I cooked, cleaned up the house, washed floors. Got a steak supper for Billie’s 44th birthday. In evening we had ice cream and cake and the Horton family all came up. Billie got money and nice useful gifts and pretty cards. It began raining about dark.
