The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 8 -11, 1975

Saturday, March 8, 1975

Cold today, cloudy. Same messy problem out at the barn, wet, clammy and cold. Billie is discouraged. Lawrence called Billie, went with him in p.m. Bill didn’t do anything all day. Billie called at Lloyd’s, done up some odds and end Saturday chores. I pick things over in the cupboards, papers, boxes etc. Got ready to work on my scraps.

Sunday, March 9, 1975 Windy

It was a sunny day but very very windy and cold. I couldn’t wash. I done regular work, took my bath and then I worked on my scraps etc. Betty called with the butter. No one else all day. Carmen sick today. Billie up to Chet’s. They are about the same, not very good.

Monday, March 10, 1975 8 below

I got my work done and washed. It was cloudy all night. Northern lights shone bright all night. I got my wash out and got ready and went to Portland with Betty to the big sale at Zayre’s. I got a few necessities. The store was crowded. It was kind of a hazy day, but good drying. We called at Dorothea’s, took down some eggs to her. Kim called after school. Zak up here after he got home from school today. Betty and Walt got there income tax checks back, $1200.

Tuesday, March 11, 1975 up in the 30 and 40° temps, very nice sunny mild day

A quite nice day. I done regular work, went down to Betty’s when Bill went down to do the chores. She went to the coffee club meeting today. I washed and ironed. Then I washed kitchen floor, dusted and prepared a roast spare ribs of pork for supper and had Fern and Lloyd up. We was glad to have them and they seem to enjoy the supper and evening. Carmen called a little while.
