The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 5 - 8, 1975

Saturday, April 5, 1975

Well, all kinds of weather. Snow, cloudy, rained some. A dreary day. I done my regular work. Washed floor, cooked etc. Made a birthday cake for Lil. In evening Betty and I went to the hospital. We met Joy and Debbie there. Pat had a bad fall at the hospital outside. It hurt her bad so they put her right into the hospital. Betty and I went down in p.m. Then called Joy and she came right over. Esther came home today. I saw Sally up at the hospital. She seemed just the same as ever. I was so pleased she seemed to be the same as we saw Linds and Ian’s little boy, real cute.

Cloudy today and cold. I washed as we had a little sunshine. I was busy all day. Carmen and Kim up in PM, also Betty, Walt and Kim came up. I didn’t go to the hospital today or tonight. We got the rug down on the floor in the room downstairs.

Monday, April 7, 1975

Cloudy and cold. I was at Betty’s all day. Betty was in Portland at the Maine Medical Center with Kimberly. She had an EKG, also x-rays. Checked all over and examined. Said she was in good shape. She does not need her tonsils out. Holly went with her to see George. He is gaining. Robert came home from the hospital today. Celia Witham Ward died this morning.

Well another one of those days. It has been cloudy last part of the day, some sunshine. I washed, clothes dried good. I got them in and ironed also did some ironing I had on hand. Pat came home from the hospital. Betty entertained her coffee group this forenoon. In p.m. Dawn was there. They put the desk together and the cradle for Kim’s birthday. Bill didn’t do anything all day long as usual.
