The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 1 - 4, 1975 A Bad Storm

Tuesday, April 1, 1975 only 10 above this morning at 5:20

Electric went off again today for about an hour or a little more. I cooked a chicken dinner and had Billie and Cliff over for supper. Later Betty, kids and I went to the hospital. They are better. I had a busy day. It has been very cold all day and windy.

Wednesday, April 2, 1975

A very nice day. Mild. Up early and Betty and I took off and went to Portland. We shopped for Kimmy’s birthday and went to Martin’s and shopped for groceries. Gone all day. I got a lot of groceries. In evening we went down to the hospital to see Esther and Bob. They are much better. Called at Fern and Lloyd’s too.

Thursday, April 3, 1975

A very bad snow storm. It began to snow early in the morning before daylight. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s. We wrapped Kimmy’s birthday gifts. Came home, after the mail came we went to town and cashed checks. Then I came home and made out the bills and paid them up. It is late in p.m. 4:15 and the storm is very BAD. Zak didn’t get home from school until 1:30. Carmen home on time, but Kimmy’s buses running late. 4:20.

Friday, April 4, 1975 no school

Still snowing. Cloudy and windy. A bad day. In evening Betty and I went down to Dorothea’s. We went and had a reading. Bill and Kimmy went to town. Kim up here in p.m. Carmen up here for supper. What a mess the snow has made. It is so awful sickening.
