The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 1 - 4, 1975


Tuesday, July 1, 1975

Another very nice day. I done a big ironing this morning. After Zak got up I did my work. Got noon lunchs made and made some bread. Dorothea came at about noon. We talked then we, Betty, Dorothea, Zak and I all went to town and to get some vegetables. Came home, I got the chicken in to brown after cooking it on top of the stove. We enjoyed Dorothea’s visit very much. Joy and girls called. Carmen and Kim went swimming today. LLOYD got a lawnmower tractor today.



Wednesday, July 2, 1975 Bill $198.40 Althea $92.40 a new 8% Social Security raise

Well I made a mistake in my dates. Betty, Zak and I went to Portland. I did a lot of shopping. It was quite hot. We got the black top for the driveway, more paint etc. Had the increase in the Social Security checks this month. We like that.



Thursday, July 3, 1975

A fair day. We got a little rain last night. I defrosted refrigerator. I did a dite of washing and I figured up the bills etc., to town, cashed checks, put money in bank etc. Paid telephone, lights and got some groceries.



Friday, July 4, 1975

A very nice day. I worked all a.m., done regular work. Walt worked. Betty took kids, Fern, Lloyd and me to the parade. Came home, got supper and went to the fireworks in evening. Joy and girls went too. Kim had Kathy to play with, Zak had Vince and Laurie played with Carmen.
