The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Monday, August 18, 1975

Cloudy and foggy when we got up. It cleared off nice and sunny. Quite warm. Carmen came up and stayed all day and to supper. We or she made some good cookies. Bill made Dorothea a set of doorsteps.



Tuesday, August 19, 1975

A nice day, not so hot. I done regular work. Zak here for breakfast. He was here all day. Betty to meeting in a.m. and made pickles in p.m. Kimmy had company, Laurie Smith. Carmen and Zenya rode horseback. I did a dite of cooking.

A very nice clear cool day. On the quite cool side, some wind occasionally. I didn’t do much, Zak here. Betty and girls down to Dawn’s. Betty bought me a new toaster which I am very glad of. Billie done some odds and end jobs, he gave the little CALF a shot, he has cold. Billie went with Lawrence and Butch to get a stove for Lawrence. Bill and I went for a short ride after supper.



Thursday, August 21, 1975 cow and heifer bred

Another beautiful day. I done up my work. I washed, went down to Betty’s. Billie worked at Joe’s. The cow and heifer were bred today.
