The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 5 - 8, 1975


Saturday, July 5, 1975 HOT, TRACTOR

Another hot dry day. Lawns are all dry and crisp. Gardens are very dry also. Well today about 1 o’clock the new Farmall Super C Tractor came. Also mowing machine and plow came with it. We are all very pleased with it. I sure hope it will work alright and for a long time. In a.m. Betty and I went to Norway and around.



Sunday, July 6, 1975 hot

Another very hot day. I done regular work, washed, ironed and mended. In p.m. we had a cookout. Fern, Lloyd, the Hortons. Keith here all forenoon. Lloyd called in a.m. Carmen and Zenya rode horseback after supper.



Monday, July 7, 1970 Peas

Clear and hot. I did another wash. Also ironed. We picked our first mess of peas today. They were darn good. Betty and Walt up after supper for a little while. I had Zak this a.m. while Betty went to Portland to get her aerial view pictures of the house. They were very good.



Tuesday, July 8, 1975 Zak to Dr. for checkup, okay

Cloudy again and foggy early. It cleared away middle of forenoon. I had Zak. Betty to her meeting. Kim up a little while. Kim and Carmen swimming in p.m. Bill finished painting the barn, but all painting is done. Zak to the doctors. He is okay. They did not have to dilate. Dr. thinks he is okay now.
