The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 28 - 31, 1975

Monday, July 28, 1975 Got Hay

A most beautiful day, no humidity sunny and warm. I did my ironing, went to town with Betty. We got some Swiss chard greens for her and got them into her freezer. Billie got some more hay up to E. Linscott’s.  Betty and Bill helped him to unload it. Cow seems to be drying up, not very good. Had the veterinarian for her, he gave her shots medicine etc. Went to town, done some shopping, Betty did. She made a Italian spaghetti supper and Billie was down there for supper. Esther over here tonight. Walt decided not to get the cottage.

Tuesday, July 29, 1975 Betty and Walt, Dorothea

Another nice day. Clear weather. Betty and Walt’s 8th wedding anniversary and Dorothea’s 38th birthday. A call from DOROTHEA. She is feeling better and more happy. David moved home last Sunday she said. I was down to Betty’s and helped her in p.m. do her string beans. Kids and I picked them in a.m. while she was at the coffee group meeting. Joy was there and helped.

Wednesday, July 30, 1975

A very nice summer day, warmer. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s to help clean up the mess over in the pasture. Bill hauled away some of it. Billie hauled sawdust for himself and Betty. Joy’s three girls, Laurie, Kathy and Cindy all at Betty’s today and will stay tonight. We are having some very nice weather. Cow is better. Saved her milk tonight to check it. Esther went blueberrying.

Thursday, July 31, 1975 HOTTEST

This is been the hottest one yet. I done regular work. Figured out my bills and checking and savings accounts. Betty, Kim, Dawn and their friends all went blueberrying over to Nevers blueberry fields. Billie trimmed lawns and got rest of his hay, he was overcome by the heat. Bill helped haul the hay.
