The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 26 - 29, 1975


Tuesday, August 26, 1975

Another? day. Carmen up for a while this forenoon. I made a pie, done regular work. I called Dorothea. Jeff still can’t work, got to go to hospital September 2 for checkup. They like the steps very much. Betty had the coffee group at her house today.



Wednesday, August 27, 1975 sunny

A beautiful day. I done my regular work and washed. We have had for the past three days some good rain showers. It has helped a lot. I had Zak while Betty, Dawn and Kim went to Auburn and got some bread and pastries at the thrift store. She got me some milk bottles at a garage sale. Carmen helped Bill this morning, he put a gate post in for Walt. Billie worked today. Bill took me to town, but I had to ask him. Carmen up with us tonight.



Thursday, August 28, 1975 got tractor parts

I did a big wash. I done up my regular work. Betty came and we went to town and done Fern’s shopping. Walt home all day. He done some odds and end jobs. Billie didn’t work but he went to Norway or Oxford and got the tractor parts he and Bill put tractor together and done some mowing with it. They are so glad to have it to use. Carmen here all day and for supper. Esther over tonight.



Friday, August 29, 1975

A cloudy dreary day. I done up my regular work. Did a dite of washing, down to Betty’s and we went to town and done rest of the shopping. We went to a few barn sales. Pa’s hot water tank spring a leak. Jones came and fixed it, got a new one. Billie worked today.
