The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 1 - 3, 1975 125 Degrees!

Friday, August 1, 1975 PAID TAXES, VERY HOT

Another very very very hot day. It was awful. Well, I done up my work. Went up to Conway with Betty. I didn’t do much extra work but in p.m. Betty and Zak, we done our grocery shopping. It was unmerciful hot. I paid the taxes today. Came home from shopping and I cooked two turkeys and made bread and got potatoes ready for the salad. Esther here after supper. She made my salads.

Saturday, August 2, 1975 125° on our front of garage thermometer HOT HOT HOT AWFUL HOT, PICNIC AT JOYS

Each day it has got hotter ever since first of the week. Well I got up early this morning. I cooked my string beans and made a cake. Frosted it, did that dab of ironing. I done up all my work, got things together and at about 11:30 we left to go to Joy’s. It was the hottest day on record for many years (26). It was 99 and 100 in the shade. We didn’t get any relief at the lake but we had a glorious time. We had a nice turkey dinner. It was very good and to my surprise the darned critters had a birthday for me. Gee. That was supposed to be for Dorothea’s birthday (38) and Betty and Walt’s wedding anniversary (8). It was very nice of the kids. I got $37 in money, a new dress too. Boxes of best kind of chocolate and a pencil sharpener from Zak. Many beautiful cards. Ruth Hatch, Joy, Debbie, Laurie, Kathy, Cindy, Walt, Betty, Carmen, Kimmy, Zak, Fern, Lloyd, Dorothea and David, Bill, Billie and I. Es was invited. Had the kids though.

Sunday, August 3, 1975 Laurie’s rabbit was found dead, Cooler

It was some sunny this morning when we got up this morning but it soon clouded up and when it did it got much cooler. The temp dropped from 85 and 90 to 75. What a big relief. It has been so awful hot for the past week. Well, I got up about 7:30 and I began to clean up from the past two days. I picked up and picked up. Put all things back into place. I washed and washed dishes, I defrosted the two refrigerators. Changed the beds. I vacuumed all the house and washed back porch floor. My clothes dried quite well so I got them in and done my ironing. Billie busy all day. Bill just sat and sat and walked around the house. Kim went home at about four.
