The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 4 - 7, 1975


Monday, August 4, 1975

Cloudy all day. Some rain showers. I done up my regular work, got ready and about 10:00 Joy and girls came. We went down to Betty’s and Betty, Fern and Es got Italian sandwiches at Amato’s, came home and we all ate and then sat and talked. Joy seem to be pleased about it all. The kids had a great day all day long. Laurie and Kathy stayed all night. Came home about 3:30, cooked a roast beef dinner. It was very good. Bill to town and cashed the checks and put the money in the bank. Paid bills.



Tuesday, August 5, 1975

Cloudy and rainy when we got up but it cleared and came off very hot. I cleaned up my cupboards, packed the canned goods in order. I did a small wash, made a pie etc. went to town. Ilan called this evening. Billie up to Chet’s. Lil quite unrational tonight, Billie said. Joy came after the girls tonight. Kimmy is tired all out. Exhausted.



Wednesday, August 6, 1975 BULL, cooler, shell beans

Partly cloudy and showers. I done regular work, picked over some more of the cupboards etc. Went to town with Betty, also to Sandy Creek and stopped at a couple will antique places. In p.m. over to Joy’s and came home. Picked some shell beans for the first time. We got a little sun today, not much. We paid Was Joy for the car today $1100. Tonight Lawrence brought the bull. The black heifer got bred.



Thursday, August 7, 1975

Joy takes her dog to Brunswick to be shipped to Bermuda. Saw two deer out in Walt field this morning. We went to Mrs. Owens at Denmark, also Betty went and looked at a stove. Esther and Cliff here this evening. I washed after supper, it is supposed to be a good day tomorrow. Bill went with us over to Denmark to Mrs. Owens place.
