The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 30 - September 1, 1975 Lil to the hospital

Saturday, August 30, 1975

What a miserable rainy day. It rained hard all day. We needed that though. I made bread, pie etc. Bill and Billie didn’t do anything. Esther’s folks didn’t get away until very late in the day. They went to Dawn’s at a cottage. They had a good time though. We done the chores and got Pa’s supper. Pres. Ford in Portland and Augusta this weekend.

A beautiful day, but coolish. I washed. We got ready and went over to Esther’s about 12:30. We had a very nice cookout dinner. Barbecue chicken, salads, beets (Harvard), bread, butter, celery, pies, cookies and cake. It was very good. Her guests were Yates, Crooks, Hortons, Thomases and the Ragers. Cliff, Billie and herself. All seemed to enjoy it and have a good time. Kids all had a lot of fun playing etc. Kennard called. He looks awful bad. I’m afraid his time isn’t too much longer. He looks so pitiful.

Monday, September 1, 1975 Lil to hospital, Susan moved to Esther’s

Clear and sunny most of the day but it got hazy and not too sunny later in the day. A damp wind in p.m. I did a dite of washing. Also I ironed. Done regular work. Kim and Zak here in a.m. Betty moved Susan from Casco to Esther’s. Billie did a lot of trimming with the tractor. At 4:30 this morning Chet had Lil taken to the hospital. She was in serious condition. She has pneumonia and I would say she had had a stroke. Billie up to Chet’s tonight.
