The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, March 29, 1988

 

A very nice sunny day. I been busy. I made a pie, ironed, did some washing. Betty called. Zack to Portland. Zack had to go to Portland to sign up for some part of the Army or the National Guard. Carmen called in on her way home from work this PM. Kim to work today. Her eye is bothering her. The new kitchen looks very nice today. Very lite and bright. Billie got his truck fixed today.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 30, 1988

 

This is been a very nice day. I done up the work. Did a dite of washing. I got things prepared for supper. Carmen and Brogan came. They went down to Betty’s and did the dog nursing today and cats. Carmen did my shopping. Bill a dite better. Tonight Dorothea and Betty came at night and finished the kitchen papering. I went down to stay with Brogan while Betty went to town. Also Carmen. We are having a nice day. Zack called tonight.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 31, 1988

 

Very nice hot day. Sunny. Billie raked all the yard for the first time. The plumbers were here early this morning. They got the washing machine fixed. But it still leaks. Bill worked on it. Carmen, Brogan and Kim came. Carmen cleaned up the house. Kim got the lunches. Brogan had on her little leopard suit. Betty and Betty over to Lewiston. I got tw you o pretty plants from Betty and Betty. I stayed with Brogan after Carmen went to work till Betty got home.

 

 

 

Friday, April 1, 1988

 

A kind of cloudy day. It was warm temperatures. Holly came and cleaned the ceilings, walls and radiators. Looks nice. Checks came today. Bill took them down and got them cash. Billie raked and cleaned the yard and down to the Cemetery where they made deep ruts. Betty and the rest of their party up to camp tonight for the first time. Zack home sick with a cold and sore throat today.
