The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 4, 1988 A New Year

 

Friday, January 1, 1988 new checks $413 Bill, $175 mine total $588

 

A new year begins today. I sat up, watched the old year out and the new year in. Zack was here. Billie watched it too. I did a wash, regular work. Dorothea and Joy to Portland to see Bill. He is fair, wants to come home. Milan came home from NCM hospital today, he is pretty good.

 

 

 

Saturday, January 2, 1988

 

This has been a nice sunny day. I done up the regular work. Washed floors, ironed and then I worked at the desk making out bills etc. Betty and Walt called, they went to Portland to see Bill. He is pretty good. Zack babysat for Brogan in PM till Betty and Walt got home.

 

 

 

Sunday, January 3, 1988

 

A fair day. I worked at the desk. I worked on the puzzle. Zack up today. Walt up for coffee. Milan came up for a little while. Billie and I called on Milan and Betty.

 

 

 

Monday, January 4, 1988

 

When we got up this morning it had been and was snowing. I did a washing. I did some odds and end jobs. Carmen came about 11:30. She cleaned up the house, changed beds etc. She went down to Betty’s. She went to town for us today. Bill called from Mercy Hospital, he is coming home Wednesday. Dr. Winchenbach called, he says Bill is quite good now, his swelling has gone down. There isn’t any infection. Dorothea called him and they talked. Betty to Dr. Freeman over to Fryeburg for her back. Also Milan to Dr. Goldenhar.
