The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 25 - 28, 1988 Uncle Milan To Hospital

Monday, January 25, 1988

A quite nice day. It is supposed to be a major storm coming tonight. It was quite mild. I did the work. Carmen came and did the beds and cleaning. I did the washing this morning. Carmen got the lunches. She had to work today. Brogan to the doctors.

Tuesday, January 26, 1988 LOTS OF SNOW THIS MORNING, NO SCHOOL

It cleared off, about 8 to 12 inches around here and the power went off for a while during the night. I got the regular work done up. I did my ironing and got to watch programs at nine. Zack up and done the shoveling.

Wednesday, January 27, 1988 hair set, MILAN TO HOSPITAL

I got up early to get around to go to get my hair set. About 9:15 Milan and Betty came as Betty had been down to the hospital for her physical. They stayed for just a little while. We did not expect that to be Milan’s last visit or we never would see him alive again. A terrible shock. About 5 PM Betty called and told us she was afraid Milan was gone. We was shook up. Billie was going right down but got stuck in the snow. Betty said the ambulance had come and had taken him to the hospital. We all went down. He never came to at all. We stayed with him until late. Came to Milan and Betty’s and she made calls, we talked and discussed things. The doctor hadn’t given any real hope and he had severe brain damage. Carmen over today. She was at the hospital tonight. Brogan very sick with flu.

We went down to see Milan at the hospital again tonight. He is just the same. It is awful to see him like that. It is so hard as we thought he was doing better. Of course with these heart attacks we know it could happen. But when it does it is hard to accept it. We stayed with him until 11 then came home. Betty was so tired and knew she had to get up early tomorrow to go to meet Norma. Betty S and Betty H had been with him all day. In evening Dorothea, Betty H, Betty S, Susan, Joy, Lorraine and I was there also Susan Ingraham. Not any change when we came home. Kim was with us today when she could be. Carmen very sick with flu. Baby over here to Betty’s. Joy babysat in PM. Very cold.
