The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 - 12, 1987

 

Saturday, January 9, 1988

 

A nice day, not very cold. I done up my work. Washed floors etc. etc. I got Bill’s lunch and Billie’s. I went to Lewiston with Betty to get Walt’s paper. Also I got some milk. David came and visited with Billie. Carmen and Brogan called. Bill is getting stronger, he eats very well. Billie cleaned up from the snow. It snowed about five or 6 inches. In other places it was a lot more. I made a cake today. Baked the beans and made biscuits for supper. Carmen and Kim out tonight, not a date, just luncheon. Zack hauled wood for Walt.

 

 

 

Sunday, January 10, 1988

 

A very nice day, on the cold side. The sun warmed it up during the day. A beautiful day. I done up the work. Walt up for coffee. Carmen and Brogan came. She left Brogan here while she went down town with Betty and Walt to see about moving a house. No go.

 


 






 

Monday, January 11, 1988 Zack’s new job

 

I did a big wash. Carmen came, did the cleaning. Brogan is very entertaining. Carmen down town. She went down and done chores. Zack goes on a new job tonight after school at Howell Labs.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 12, 1988

 

I did a big ironing. Cleaned up the house, made a pudding (cornflake) for supper. Prepared my supper. Got a roast pork in. Wrote to Esther and sent a couple bills out. Carmen called a minute. She and Brogan went away this PM. Had a good time. Bill and Billie got their haircuts today. Carmen and Kim did the shopping up to New Hampshire. Kim had to take her car over to Fryeburg to get it fixed.
