The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, January 21, 1988

Today they had the lady come to trim the pony’s hooves but it was more serious. She is very sick, her feet are all gone, founder they call it. She is in serious condition, sweating and wet all over. Carmen came over, she worked all day in the barn. I was down to Betty’s to stay with Brogan for a while. Milan was there. Bill came down. Zack worked this PM, no school, teacher’s convention.

Friday, January 22, 1988 PONY

Today at 11:45 AM pony was laid to rest. Her name is Dutchess. The vet came and put her to sleep. It is a big relief. It was a long hard death. Carmen was hiding and peeking up here. Betty was hiding and peeking from the den. Walt had to bear it all. Dorothea took Fern to the hospital for x-rays. Since she fell her leg is very sore, can’t get around very well. Zack home again from school, still a teacher’s convention no school. Kassie’s mouth or nose isn’t healing very good. At 3 PM Dexter McDaniels came, did the grave and at 3:45 PM she was buried and all taken care of. Dorothea called this evening. Then she went down to Milan and Betty’s. Joy and Betty was there and Carmen called in. Kim out on a new date tonight.

This has been a very nice sunny mild day. I got up at 6 AM. Got the breakfast and regular work done. Cleaned up the house, washed floors etc. Betty, Carmen and Brogan came about 11. Carmen got the lunches. Brogan was up to her tricks, very cute. Zack called too. Carmen and Zack worked in the barn to get it back to normal since the pony went.
