The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 25 - 28, 1988

 

Friday, March 25, 1988

 

Very mild. A mostly cloudy day, in late PM it began to rain. Well Merle got a lot done today. He probably will finish up tomorrow. I didn’t do much housework today. I washed, washed some curtains and mended some things. Carmen, Brogan, Kim and Betty called. Brogan is a bright light around here. In late PM Susan came and brought me a nice picture of Milan and Betty. Dorothea came and brought George’s letter down. Bill not too spunky. Billie is having trouble with his foot. David sold his heifer.

 

 

 

Saturday, March 26, 1988

 

Cloudy rain showers. Merle came and worked in the kitchen till noon. I made a chiffon cake, bread, rolls. Betty and Walt to Portland. Betty called. Kim didn’t work today. Time off also tomorrow.

 

 

 

Sunday, March 27, 1988

 

A nice sunny day after it cleared away. Carmen didn’t get over today. Dennis’s folks came and got her to take her over there (Brogan). We miss her when she don’t come. Bill working at the desk.

 

 

 

Monday, March 28, 1988 Began Papering

 

To Auburn today shopping. I got a lot of things. Betty H, Betty S, Carmen and me. We picked Brogan up at Dennis’s mother’s in Lewiston. She was glad to see her mother. Easter card from Eddie. Nice. Well we shopped around and I got dress shoes, new towels, washcloths. We didn’t get home till late, 7 o’clock. Bill didn’t act as though he felt good. Well Dorothea and Betty came, they worked in the kitchen papering till 2 AM. They was so tired. It looks so nice. Billie went down and got his truck tires pumped up. He cleaned the (?) out. David called and thanked everyone for birthday cards.
