The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 21 - 24, 1988 Billie's 57th Birthday

 

Monday, March 21, 1988 Merle Barker came to varnish

 

Very cold and windy. I been busy all a.m. Watched soaps in PM. Today Merle came and started the varnishing. Billie to Dr. Goldenhar. His foot isn’t very good. Carmen, Brogan, Kim and Betty here. Zack called after school. His ears was about frozen. He called later in evening. His fingers was frozen. Also Joy and Cindy. Joy couldn’t get her car started. Zack helped her. That is how he froze his fingers. Walking from the corner up here is how his ears got so cold. Carmen done shopping. Bill don’t act very good. Miss Milan’s visits. This is been a very cold and windy day.

 

 

 

Tuesday, March 22, 1988 Billie 57 years today

 

Not so cold. I got things ready and prepared for the birthday supper. We had roast beef (very good), salad, shell beans, birthday cake. In evening Carmen called on her way home from work. Betty H and Betty S came also Walt, Brogan and Zack. Dorothea was here. We had ice cream and cake. He got a lot of cards and a good amount of money. Bill to the doctors for checkup. Betty and Kim took my desk, yellow chair and the kitchen chair over to be done over. They got paper for her bathroom.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 23, 1988

 

A nice day. Very spring like. I done regular work. We watch soaps in PM. Dennis over to Carmen’s today. He got a great kick out of his daughter’s actions.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 24, 1988 Not so cold

 

Partly sunny and some clouds today. Merle here, he is doing very well with the varnishing. Zack called a minute after school. Carmen here, she and Brogan to Betty’s for a steak supper. I did ironing today. Bill down to Betty’s in PM.
