The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 18 - 20, 1983 Nanny and Poppa's 53rd Anniversary, Poppa Goes In Hospital

Tuesday, October 18, 1983

It is been quite a nice sunny day. On the quite mild side. I got breakfast, ironed and then went down and watch them move and clean up down at the shed. Carmen is going to help her for a week or so. Billie is helping also used the tractor to haul the mess they cleaned up away. Bill helped some but he is so weak he didn’t do much. This is the 53rd wedding anniversary. Going to supper at Betty’s. We got some very pretty cards, money from Dorothea and Milan Betty, and a beautiful card from Susan and family, Esther and a very pretty bouquet from the Horton kids.

Wednesday, October 19, 1983 BILL IN HOSPITAL

Another nice day. I did up regular work. Then I washed. Billie and Betty working on the shed cleaning up around etc. Bill had an appointment with the doctor. He looked very bad so the doctor put him into the hospital to stay for a few days. We walked down to the spring. A good walk, it is very pretty outside, the leaves are different colors and the clear sunny skies.

Another nice day. I done up the work and got ready and went to town. Carmen and I. We did quite a dite of shopping. Carmen came home and worked on the shed roof. Betty got her outside work done. She came up and got me to go down to see the shed.
