The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 22 - 25, 1983 It's Christmas Again!

Thursday, December 22, 1983 a lot of snow came 5 to 6 inches

A snow storm came today, about 5 to 6 inches. Kids came home early. It was cloudy when we got up. It began to snow about 11:30 AM. Betty and I to town. We did a lot of shopping. I came home, made my last batch of fudge. I did a few odds and end jobs. Dorothea called on way home from work. Carmen got home early from work. Bill not very good tonight. He had chest pains. I got a lot to do the next two days.

Saturday, December 24, 1983 Carmen became engaged to Richard Alan Barry tonight, a very pretty diamond

A busy day, on the cloudy side. I done up my work, made a pie. Swept, dusted, washed floors. Kim came, she made all the sandwiches, dips and made preparations for tonight. What a big help. We had an oyster stew supper. Fern came up about 4:30. We ate and then we got prepared for the evening. We had a lot of very nice gifts. Useful too. David, Dorothea, Dawn, Betty, Walt and family, Nicole Morgan and Alan R. Barry and Carmen became engaged tonight. We all was excited. We all are very pleased and we liked him. He is a nice guy.

Sunday, December 25, 1983

Well it was a cold but nice clear pretty day. I got up early, we got breakfast and done up the work. Got ready to go down to Betty’s for the big Christmas dinner. And to watch them open their gifts. It was interesting to watch and see all the many nice gifts they got. Had a very nice dinner just like we used to have. It was a cold day. We came home at about 5:30. We took our tree down, cleaned up and it was taken out. Jeff, Dorothea and David Neister called, brought us nice things.
