The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 4 - 6, 1983

Friday, November 4, 1983

Very heavy rains and high winds all day. I cleaned up the house, swept and dusted. I did a big wash. I made up apple pie and a tuna fish casserole for supper. Bill is supposed to come home tomorrow. So I will have the rest of it for his supper tomorrow night. I watched my shows in PM. Billie took it easy this PM. It helped him a lot. Kimmy up to work on the float at the shelter. They have got to work tomorrow morning too.

Saturday, November 5, 1983 HOMECOMING PARADE, BILL CAME HOME

I got my work done up as early as I could. Made bread and all. David called in to see the steer. Bill called about 9 AM. He come home from the hospital. About 10:30 or 11 Dorothea and I went down to get him. He looks very pale, he is thin and very weak. I hope in a week he will be much better. His feet are better. This was a poor weekend for the parade. Rain almost all day. Kim’s last homecoming. Bill not eating much as yet. Zak up for supper. Betty and Walt to Rhode Island.

Sunday, November 6, 1983

A mostly cloudy day. It cleared off toward night. I wrote two letters, Es and Thena. Dorothea and David called, made a nice long visit. Carmen and Alan called. Charlene and Tom called. Walt and Betty got home about (blank) PM. They sold the house. Brought the canoe home, they called on Milan and Betty’s. Bill is about the same, still quite weak. Aunt Vi’s home.
