The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 29 - December 2, 1983

Tuesday, November 29, 1983 Rain

It has rained all day. I got up early, got my work done. Got ready and Bill took me down to Betty’s where I helped she and Carmen wrap many nice Christmas gifts. It was an all day job. Got them done and ready to go upstairs. I got home about three and watched TVs General Hospital.

Wednesday, November 30, 1983 David

It was clear when we got up this morning but it clouded up and became a partly sunny day and on the windy side and snow flurries. David in NCM hospital for a hernia operation, went in at 7 AM. The steer is not okay today.

Fair most of the day then it got cloudy. Spitting snow all day. I didn’t do much. I washed this morning. In PM put up the lights in the windows and made out bills. Steer is still sick.

Friday, December 2, 1983 DOCTOR FOR STEERS

A quite nice day. I went to town, the first thing in the morning. Got home before 9 AM. I came home, did the regular work, what I didn’t get done before I went to town. Carmen went to mnt pleasant this morning looking for work. No luck. Then she went to Portland, better luck down there. Dorothea called in evening. She called at Betty’s. She said Betty didn’t act as though she felt while. Today the steers had the Dr., they have pneumonia. He gave them shot, pills. Etc. And said they should be eating and much better by Sunday.
