The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 11 - 13, 1983 New Calf

Friday, November 11, 1983 CALF BORN

A cloudy and rainy day, some wind. I didn’t do too much today. Kim came up in PM. We started on the puzzle. We worked all PM on it. I watched soaps in PM too. About 5:30 Ellie May had her calf. She had been in pain for over 12 hours. It was hard for her. A nice big bull calf. Her utter was swollen very badly and it was so uncomfortable for her. Carmen was here when it was born and Dorothea called at that time. Zak and Walt up and helped to feed the calf etc. Bill is gaining.

Well it was a better day. Broken clouds in a.m. and in PM it cleared and sun came out. Awful heavy black wind clouds. The wind blowed a lot, very heavy at times. Betty called and Dorothea called. The cow and calf are doing okay. David came down this a.m. also. Bill much better. Alan Berry moved into the shelter apartment today.

A very nice sunny day. We made out orders for the Herd’s Dairyman calendars today. Dorothea called. Billie didn’t do much. He called at Dorothea and David’s and at Fern’s. Hortons raked their leaves. Carmen had supper with Alan tonight at his new home.
