The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 22 -25, 1984 I think she meant work!

Sunday, January 22, 1984 25 below this morning, Carmen and Alan both working today at the mountain, Kim skiing

This was a nice clear day, but it has been very cold all day. Tonight it is dropping. I done up my work. Betty and Zak came. I went down to Dr. Gordon’s at Casco to have an eye exam etc. Didn’t do much today. Alan and Carmen worked over to Pleasant Mountain. Kim went skiing. She liked it and said it was fun. She never skied before. Susan, Monica and Vince called today. Zak helped Dorothea get paper off the walls.

Monday, January 23, 1984

A nice day, not so cold as yesterday. I did a wash and other odds and end jobs. They had the veal (breaded) for supper. It was very good. I didn’t eat it.

Tuesday, January 24, 1984 Carmen and Alan up for supper.

It was cloudy when we got up, it had been flurrying, just a dusting of snow. Later in a.m. it began to snow and snowed hard about an inch then began to rain and sleet. The traveling got bad so most schools are dismissed. SAD 61 was one of them. Tonight Carmen and Alan up for supper. Pot roast, they liked it and was very pleased. They are happy and think a lot of each other. I hope all goes well with them. I hope other people will learn to care too.

Wednesday, January 25, 1984 mild temp

It was very foggy when I got up this morning. Sun kept breaking through a little but after 2 PM it came out. I worked on my bills etc. A nice day. It was up in mild 30s. Bill to the doctors. He is doing okay. Carmen skid into the ditch this morning on her way to bed.
