The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 29 - 31, 1984

Sunday, January 29, 1984

A nice sunny day, not too cold. I done up the regular work. I looked at the rest of the scrapbooks (Uncle Lewis). They are interesting to me as I knew most of all these people. In late PM Carmen called a little while. She said she made over $53 at the mountain yesterday and did well today. Not as many people there today. Zak still sick.

Monday, January 30, 1984 Zak sick and to NCM hospital.

Was some clouds and some sun. A quite nice day on the temp side. I did a big wash. Made a blueberry pie and made biscuits and cooked a steak supper. Zak has been sick all day. He has had a temp of 104 all day. Very sick. In PM Walt came home, took him to the hospital to see the doctor. They admitted him and he is very sick and weak. They took many tests etc. Betty was down to see him in the evening. He was very sick, didn’t talk or anything. They called hospital all evening, and no improvement.

It began snowing in the night. We got about 3 inches here. Along the coast and southern part the got more. No school in many places, they held the buses up here for two hours. Kim went. Zak isn’t at all good when they heard from him earlier. I hope he comes along and will be okay.

This is been a cold winter months, a real cold one about zero temps, a few mornings of 18 to 25 below. We have had a lot of sunshine too. Billie quite well except his hands still giving him trouble. I have done some puzzles this month. Dawn very sick and in hospital, once a operation. Bill has been in for blood. Kim is getting ready for her graduation this spring. Dorothea still working every day. Joy working at the dowel mill. Susan has a car, I hope it will last her a long while. I got glasses. Carmen moved up to the shelter. Zak to the NCM hospital, he was very sick. A kidney infection.
