The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 7 - 10, 1983

Monday, November 7, 1983

 

A nice day, some wind, but not too cold. I washed, watched soaps. Carmen and Betty here for lunch. Bill is improving a dite. He ate pretty good or better. I cooked a chicken dinner and Kim was here. She enjoyed her supper. I sent the order to Spencer’s today. I sent for Spencer things.

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 8, 1983 Election Day

 

A heavy frost this morning. I went to town with Betty. We did Fern’s banking. I got Carmen’s Christmas gift. We got Bill new slippers. I watched TV shows. Carmen looking for job, no deal. Went and had some more work done on her teeth. She and Alan here in evening. Bill is improving. A nice day. Called at Fern’s for a while. Bill in bed most of the forenoon.

 

 

 

Wednesday, November 9, 1983

 

I sent for Imprints gifts today. I sent Norma’s birthday card and Milan and Betty’s anniversary card. I done up regular work. Carmen and Betty here for lunch, they been moving Alan up to the shelter. I watched TV. Bill not gaining too fast, but there is a dite change, he eats better.

 

 

 

Thursday, November 10, 1983

 

A quite nice day, it got cloudy toward night. I did a big wash and some odds and end jobs. Betty and Carmen went to North Conway shopping. They got my stuff and Fern’s. Kim and Zak home from school, teacher’s workshop day. Billie and Zak worked all day at Fern’s doing her leaves. Kim called this evening. Bill seems better. Billie has his fall work all done.
