The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 19 - 21, 1983

Monday, December 19, 1983 Carmen to work on a new job

A very nice COLD day. On the windy side too. Well, this was Carmen’s first day at work. She is very pleased to be at work. I did bedroom windows and curtains in the kitchen and both bathrooms. I ironed all the curtains. Tonight Alan and Carmen called, also Kim came up. She and Betty to Portland. Kim to the heart clinic and both to the dentist.

Tuesday, December 20, 1983

Very cold but a clear and pretty day. I done up my work. Then Betty and Fern came. I went down with them, we saw the very loaded tree. It is beautiful and then we looked at albums. I’m going down after Christmas to look at her new ones. I made two batches of fudge this forenoon. Alan called to get something to help to work on the pipes that go to the apartment of Carmen, it froze up. Carmen likes her new job and doing okay so far. Kim to Portland tonight with Gwen, Debbie and Joleen.

Wednesday, December 21, 1983 cornballs

A nice sunny day, but very cold. I done up my work then I went down to Betty’s. We made cornballs and then she made her fudge and pumpkin bread. The man came to fix the electric stove. Bill was down there, they tried to get the water pipes thawed out but it didn’t. Walt plans to come home tomorrow early to get it going. I did my hair and put a rinse on it this morning.
