The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 3 - 6, 1983

Saturday, December 3, 1983 a beautiful day

This morning Dorothea brought David down to visit for a little while, while she went shopping. He is very sore. Can’t get around to well. The McDades came for milk. First time since October. Dorothea, Kim and I to Portland to get some Christmas shopping done. Kim didn’t do much either. Betty, Walt and Zak finished the shed. It has been a beautiful day, on the mild side. It was quite late when we got home. Alan and Carmen called today and tonight.

Working on Christmas Cards

Sunday, December 4, 1983 SNOW, Carmen and Alan to Augusta

A cloudy day in a.m. I worked at desk making out Christmas cards, wrote some letters. Carmen and Alan left about 2 PM to go to Augusta. Carmen has to be there at 7:30 for the first exam. Also she has to take another. Alan went to the police academy to fill out an application. It snowed in PM, the first time for the season.

Monday, December 5, 1983

I did a good big wash. I made three apple pies today. Bill down town a couple times today. Carmen and Alan got back from Augusta about 5 PM. Carmen took her test. Alan went to fill out the application for the police school.

Tuesday, December 6, 1983 OUTSIDE LIGHTS, FUEL

Cloudy and raining all day. Not too cold. I worked on Christmas cards. I did my ironing early. I made a chocolate pudding, it was delicious. For supper, whipped cream on it. I cooked a roast beef supper, it was good too. The lady Patricia Cannell called, we signed up for fuel assistance. Betty and Carmen down to see Jeff to get the records back. Billie put the outside lights up.
