The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 28 - October 1, 1982

Tuesday, September 28, 1982 STEER WENT

 

Well another dreary day, not so bad as yesterday. I did a wash and ironing. Betty to the dentist doctor. Billie to the doctors in Portland. Billie has got to go to the Maine Medical Hospital 24th of October for operation. I watched TV in PM. Dorothea took Billie today. Walt took Betty. Kim home with headache and asthma but went to school in PM. Bill took her. David home early, he was sick and didn’t go to work tonight. Walt’s beef went today 422 pounds.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 29, 1982

 

Another bad one. Cloudy and it rained. I done up work. Made a tapioca pudding. Defrosted porch refrigerator. Watched soaps. Bill watches them now.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 30, 1982

 

Well a fair day. I done up the work then we went to town. I came home, done a few jobs. Got Bill’s lunch then he and I watched TV soaps. Billie got the carrots and beets in. A quite nice day, quite mild. I broke my glass frames tonight. Dorothea called tonight.

 

 

 

Friday, October 1, 1982 Kim got a letter, Call from Carmen, new glasses

 

Done up the work. Partly cloudy. I done up the work, swept, I made some brownies. Today we got a telephone call from Carmen. It was so good to talk with her. She is doing okay in her school work. And is enjoying herself up there, met some new and old guys. Kim to work tonight. Zak up tonight and called a little while. Today Betty took me to Dr. Gordon’s. I got new glass frames.
