The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Mostly a cloudy day, I done up the work, washed, made a blueberry pie, a turnover and pie shell. Got roast pork cooking and onions. Went down to Betty’s in PM with Milan and Betty. We saw all the things up in the heritage room. It is very interesting. Came home, had a roast pork supper. Milan and Betty were here. Bill not very good, he looks so white and pale.

Well another miserable day. Betty took (?) Portland to the doctor. He examined him. He said the veins are plugged in his leg, that is why he is numb. He don’t know about his hip. Said it could be a pinched nerve. He has got to go back next Tuesday for more examinations. Then expect he will go into the hospital for operation. I cooked a chicken dinner, had Milan and Betty up. Very good supper. In evening had Betty, Dorothea up, we had crackers and cheese and coffee. Cookies and chocolate which Milan and Betty brought to me.

Well what a day. Cloudy in a.m. then in PM it got dark clouds and rained hard. I got ready, Betty, Delores and I to town. Fern didn’t have to go. Her hairdresser was sick. I came home, got Bill’s lunch, done a few odds and end jobs then I watched TV soaps. They were good. Billie did the lawn trimming. Butch called in evening. Walt steer is going next Tuesday.
