The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 18 - 21, 1982

A beautiful day. I done up the work then I went down to Betty’s and saw her new room, it looks nice. She took Fern to the doctors, a Dr. Miller for her eyes. No cataracts, weakened retina , other eye has 90% vision. She came up to Betty’s for supper. Carmen an hour late getting home from work. Kim to work tonight.

Thursday, August 19, 1982 sunny and hot

It is hot during the day but it cools off in evening. I done up the work, got ready and went to town with Betty and Delores. Came home, picked some shell beans for supper. Watched soaps. Bill not at all spunky. He don’t do much, he don’t have much strength. Billie mowed all the lawns, he is very lame and getting worse all the time. Carmen called late tonight to show me her new clothes.

I done up the work. Went down to Betty’s and looked at the museum. It looks very nice. Billie and Zak finished the fencing. All ready one for the horses now. Another nice day, sunny and warm. Bill feeling a dite better today. He has been working in the garden a little.

A very nice sunny day except it was very very windy and that made it cold. We had the house closed up all day. I baked beans, made rolls and cake. Carmen came up. She went over to Zenya’s grandmother’s with all the family for a big feast, turkey and all. It was so good Carmen said. Then she and Zenya went to Portland and done their school shopping. Kim came up here and called. They let the horses into the field tonight. Billie here there and everywhere.

Carmen bought a SKIRT! Tara doesn't recognize her!

Cats enjoying the post shopping carnage.
