The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 14 - 16, 1982 New Bike!

 

Tuesday, September 14, 1982 ZAK NEW BIKE

 

Foggy when we got up. But it cleared about 11. I done regular work and the ironing then I went down to Betty’s and Lisa called, then Walt came. Lisa came to take some pictures of the animals. Walt came and took Betty to New Hampshire to get Zak’s bike for his birthday. They swapped his old one for brand-new one. White Yamaha for his birthday. He is so pleased with it and is very pleased he likes it so much. And now we haven’t talked about his birthday plans. Billie hauled his dressing out. Carlton and Phyllis called this evening. Also called at Betty and Dorothea’s.

 


 

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 15, 1982 ZAK’S 13TH BIRTHDAY

 

This is been a cloudy dreary day and rain. I did my hair and got supper started then I watched soaps. Cooked a steak supper and had Zak up for his birthday supper. He is a good boy. He is so pleased with his new bike. Bill didn’t do anything. Billie down to Betty’s, he and she hauled out the manure. Carlton and Phyllis called after supper.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 16, 1982 had hair set

 

A quite nice day. I went down, got my hair set them Betty picked me up and we did the shopping. Dorothea called in evening.
