The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 22 -24, 1982 Birthday and Anniversary Celebration at Twin Oaks

Thursday, July 22, 1982

Well this is awful. We got up this morning and it was raining. It made us all sick because the hay was flat. It rained by showers all day. I done up my work and I went to Portland or South Portland with Betty and kids. Kim to the orthodontist. Betty got Zak a pair of dungarees. A fan for Kim’s bedroom. Also Kim got Betty and Walt a wedding anniversary gift. About suppertime it cleared off and there was a very nice clear sunset. I hope it will be good tomorrow.

Well it cleared and some clouds. We picked peas and beans. Betty and I to town. I have been very busy. I done my hair and I cooked, much all kinds of preparations for tomorrow. Bill busy and Billie, they mowed etc.

Saturday, July 24, 1982 birthday and anniversary, got the hay all in

A very nice sunny day until late PM. I got up early, done work up, made bread, frosted cake, made a salad and 1000 other things for the picnic at the new lakeside cottage of the Horton’s on Stearns Pond. Fern came up, she shelled peas. We left to go up there at about three. It was so nice up there. It was for Dorothea’s birthday and Betty and Walt’s anniversary. They got nice gifts and for my birthday at of the same time. I got a small battery TV to take with me wherever I go from the Hortons, from Dorothea and Dave I got a cute table and a very pretty china teacup and saucer. We had for food: roast turkey, green string beans, peas, cukes, salads, olives, cottage cheese, home made bread, milk, chocolate milk, Iced tea, coffee. Es, Susan and children, Walt’s family, us and Fern.
