The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 14 - 17, 1980

Friday, March 14, 1980 6 to 8 inches of snow, NO SCHOOL

Well this is been quite a dreary day. Rain, snow and sleet. I done my regular work. Made a new kind of salmon casserole for supper and an applesauce cake. Billie hasn’t been out much today or Bill. The driving on the highways has been bad. Carmen and Zenya came home with Natasha tonight from Orono. Carmen had a very good time.

Saturday, March 15, 1980 fair weather clouds

Partly cloudy, but a nice day, on the whole. Windy. I done up my work. Cooked, washed windows, dusted, swept whole house. Washed floors, took my bath. Worked on the puzzle in PM. Got supper. Dorothea and David came after supper and took baths. Joy and Laurie called in evening.

Sunday, March 16, 1980

A beautiful day. The wind blowed quite a lot. I done regular work. Got caught up on all the reading except magazines. Zak called. Kim and Walt came and got the rubbish. Billie out calling. Betty sick all day.

Monday, March 17, 1980

I did the wash. Done up the regular work. Cooked a roast pork supper. It rained all day. Wind blowed some.
