The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Well another mostly rainy day. I done up my work then I went down to Betty’s. Was very busy all day. Didn’t get home very early. I did regular work and washed and washed. I came home, watched rest of TV programs, got supper. It rained hard all morning. Bill and Dorothea went to Portland. Dorothea got her paneling and bathroom sink. Bill got a pair of sneakers and a pump for the furnace. They also got Betty’s bathroom cabinet. Betty and Dawn and Joy got Kim’s room all papered and painted today. Cooked a fowl for Joy and Betty’s suppers.

Well it started out to be cloudy and rain. Then it cleared off and became cold. I went down to Betty’s again, washed and washed, swept, done regular work then made or started the soup for their supper. Today they got Carmen’s room all papered and painted. Got the bathtub back. Got some of Zak’s things moved out. Kim and Carmen’s rooms looked beautiful. Joy does such a good thorough job, cleaned the room and radiator and painting. Bill cut down the willow tree. Billie worked on the fence. Kim had a bad asthma attack, she had to go to the doctors. She was very bad, also sick. I sent Billie Deming a letter today.

A beautiful day. I done up my regular work. Went down to Betty’s. I worked down there till about one. Then Dorothea came and she and I with Delores went to town to do the shopping. Betty and Dawn papered the hallway and Joy did the painting. Today Phil Autio started to work up to Dorothea and David’s. Also the people from Federal Land Bank came to appraise the place. Billie done his gate and some more fencing. Bill cut the willow tree down.
