The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Billie finished his gates. Bill called at Dorothea’s. Plumber was there putting the pipes in for the bathroom. Carmen settled her room tonight.

Saturday, April 19, 1980 Hauled Manure

A beautiful sunny day, very pretty sunny day. High temperatures 70 to 80°. I done up my work. Kim helped and we got ready to go down to Betty’s, but had to wait for her to get up. Susan and Monica called. Bill and Billie hauled out all of Walt’s manure. The most of thiers. I helped Kimmy get her bedroom settled. Then Carmen and Betty went to Norway. Walt sick all day. In PM we moved everything out of Zak’s room and that is all ready to paint and paper. Susan and kids and Chris and Steve Morgan’s kids were down to Betty’s all day.

Billie worked on his fence etc. The heifer was a dite better today. Kim up here. The paint bothered her a lot. Hortons up here for supper. Spring school vacation. I did washing at Betty’s etc. Zak up to Dorothea’s, they began papering his room. Mr. Towne sanded Betty’s kitchen floor, it looks nice.
