The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 28 - March 1, 1980 Dorothea and David Officially Bridgton Residents

Thursday, February 28, 1980

Snow flurries. But a nice and sunny day, getting colder. Wind blowing. I got ready, went to town. When I came home Billie had got home with Dot. She was here for the day. She was glad to visit for a while. I had a chicken dinner. Zak still home but better. I didn’t watch my soaps this PM. Bill and Betty up to Dorothea’s and Bill built fires to help warm up the house.

Saturday, March 1, 1980 DOROTHEA AND DAVID, VERY COLD

Up early this morning, done up the work and the regular Saturday work. Made rolls, got beans in to bake. Billie up early and got ready, went to Dorothea and David’s. He picked Carmen up too. Also Betty and she picked up Joy, they too went to D and D at Westbrook, loaded trucks, cars,  got up to their new home at about 12:30. Bill up early and got the fires going. Then he came and got Kim and me at about 10:30. We went up there and kept the fires going. Bill came back and helped Walt with the frozen pipes at the barn. About 12:30 they all came and unloaded 2 truckloads and 2 car fulls. Dorothea and Dave were quite nervous and bewildered. Betty, Kim and I stayed, helped Dorothea some til she got her bed made and a path through. Kim made cookies. I made cookies, a apple pie, beans and rolls. Betty had a dumpling soup and spaghetti and meatballs. Buddy and girls came and Walt and Zak.
