The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 25 - 28, 1980

Friday, April 25, 1980

We worked in Betty’s shed chamber today after getting Zak’s room settled. Betty, Zak and I. Billie and Carmen hauled the picnic tables, swings etc. up today. Bill up to David’s. They are working on the barn and house jacking it up etc. Zak stayed at home in his new room, he likes it very much. Hortons here for supper. I made them an oyster stew.

The weather is in very good, cloudy and rainy most of the time. I have been very busy all day. Zak up here all day. Betty worked on the kitchen floor, gave it another coat of finish. Kim up to Dawn’s. They have been busy with the supper all day, getting ready for it. Bill up to David’s all day. Billie to an auction down in Berwick with Wes Gorman.

A cloudy day. I done up my regular work. Washed, ironed, made a pie. Quite busy all day. Bill scraped paint. Billie turned the cows out for a little while. Zak up for breakfast. Carmen, Kim to the doctors. David and Dorothea called little while. They went down to help move the stove back in.

Monday, April 28, 1980 DAYLIGHT TIME, I HATE IT

School began after a week of vacation. Today we cleaned Betty’s bedroom and the white woodwork in the kitchen. Joy cleaned the ceilings and painted it. Billie gone all day. Bill to the Doctors, his blood pressure is up. He was down to Betty’s and up to Dorothea’s. A cloudy showery miserable day. Once the sun came out. We are in for a miserable week according to the forecast.
